A Study on the Quality of Life of the Patients Undergoing a Total Hip or Knee Replacement

Abstract
This descriptive study was undertaken to measure the quality of life score and investigate the correlation between the health locus of control and quality of life of persons undergoing a total hip or knee replacement (THR or TKR) as an attempt to provide basic data to help them attain a better quality of life.
From January to August, 1992, 74 patients undergoing a THR or TKR at one university hospital in Kwang-Ju, were accepted as subjects for this study and the data were obtained using a convenience sampling technique.
The instruments used for this study were the Quality of Life scale developed by Ro, You-Ja and the Health Locus of Control scale developed by Wallston & others. The data were analyzed using a SPSS program for t-test, AVNOA, and Pearson Correlation Coefficients.
The results were as follows:
1. The total average score of the quality of life of the subjects was 143.08 and the range was from 96 to 205. For each factor in the quality of life scale, the mean scores were as follows: relationship with neighbors factor 3.61, family relationship 3.50, selfesteem 3.25, economic life 2.96, physical state and function 2.90, emotional state 2.55.
2. The results of the analysis of the relationship between the quality of life scores and demographic characteristics were as follows: with exception of sex, age, educational background, marital status, monthly income, occupation, and. health insurance, only religion showed a significant difference in the quality of life score (t= 5.01, P= .028).
3. The results of the analysis of the relationship between the each factor. in the quality of life scale and demographic characteristics were as follows: there were significant differences between age and self-esteem factor (F= 2.59, P= .033), religion and relationship with neighbors factor (F= 6.09, P= .016), marital status and family relationship factor (F= 9.47, P= .000).
4. There was no relationship between the health locus of control & quality of life score. There was a significant negative correlation between the health locus of control & self-esteem factor among the six factors of the quality of life scale (r- -.2881, P= 0.006).
